US-Iran Diplomacy 2026: A High-Stakes Showdown in Oman as Trump Warns of "Bad Things"

The world’s attention has shifted to the Sultanate of Oman this week as a narrow window for diplomacy opens between the United States and Iran. Amidst soaring military tensions and mixed messages from the White House, officials have confirmed that Oman will host a critical round of negotiations starting this Friday, February 6, 2026.

The Venue Shift: Why Oman?

While initial discussions were expected to take place in Turkey, the venue was moved to Oman following a specific request from Tehran. Oman has historically served as a discreet "backchannel" for US-Iran relations.

An Iranian official told Al Jazeera that Tehran currently prefers a bilateral format, excluding other regional nations for now to ensure "focused negotiations" rather than a "political display".

The Players: Heavyweights at the Table

The upcoming talks are expected to feature high-level representatives, highlighting the urgency of the situation:

  • United States: Reports suggest Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff may participate.

  • Iran: Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is set to lead the Iranian delegation.

Trump’s Mixed Signals: Diplomacy vs. Pressure

President Donald Trump has maintained his signature "maximum pressure" strategy while leaving the door ajar for a deal. Speaking at the White House earlier this week, Trump said:

"Iran is talking to us, and we’ll see whether we can do something... otherwise, bad things would                  happen."

This ambiguity serves as leverage, as the US military recently demonstrated its resolve by shooting down an Iranian drone that approached the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea just days ago.

The Core Issues: What’s on the Table?

Unlike the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA), the 2026 talks are heavily focused on military and structural guarantees. Key points of contention include:

  1. Ballistic Missiles: Trump is demanding limits on Tehran's missile program, which Iran calls a "red line" for its national sovereignty.
  2. Nuclear Constraints: Washington is seeking "zero enrichment" and the total dismantlement of Iran's nuclear infrastructure.
  3. Regional Deterrence: The US wants Iran to end all support for its "Axis of Resistance" proxies.

Iran’s Diplomatic Scramble

In preparation for the Oman talks, Tehran has been busy on the global stage. Ali Larijani, head of the Supreme National Security Council, recently traveled to Moscow to meet with Vladimir Putin. Reports suggest Iran may be considering a proposal to ship its enriched uranium to Russia as a confidence-building measure.

While the risk of war has receded for the moment, it has not disappeared. Iran is wary of any agreement that could be reversed by a future US administration, while the Trump administration seeks "strategic submission" rather than just risk management.
