Entertainment Desk — Legendary Hollywood filmmaker James Cameron, the visionary behind global blockbusters like Titanic and Avatar, has finally opened up about his decision to permanently relocate to New Zealand. According to the director, the move was not just about the country’s world-famous natural beauty, but rather a search for social stability and a science-based community.
The Turning Point: COVID-19 In a recent interview on the show In Depth with Graham Bensinger, Cameron identified the COVID-19 pandemic as the ultimate "turning point" for his family. While many celebrities sought refuge in secluded locations, Cameron was moved by how New Zealand handled the crisis compared to the United States.
"I’m not here for the scenery; I’m here for the peace of mind," Cameron stated. He praised New Zealand for its unified, science-driven response, noting that the country successfully eliminated the virus twice and achieved a 98% vaccination rate.
In contrast, he criticized the situation in the U.S., where the vaccination rate hovered around 62% and social division was on the rise.
Science vs. Division Cameron’s move was a critique of the growing social polarization in America. He questioned where one would rather live: a place where people trust science and work toward a common goal, or a country where people are "at each other’s throats" and deny scientific facts.
"If another pandemic hits, [the US] will be in total chaos," the director warned, highlighting the moral and social stability he finds in his new home.
A Long-Term Dream Realized Cameron’s connection to New Zealand began decades ago, during his first visit in 1994. He recalled telling himself then, "One day, I’m going to live here".
In 2011, he purchased a farm in the country, but it took nearly another decade—and the completion of significant work on the Avatar sequels—to make the permanent move with his wife, Suzy Amis Cameron, and their children.
Settling Down in 2020 The family officially made the transition in August 2020, amidst the height of the global pandemic. For Cameron, the move represents the culmination of a long-term plan to find a safer, more logical environment for his family to grow.
